Questions about WooCommerce

Does WooCommerce need a cookie consent banner?
Most stores do. WooCommerce stores use cookies for the cart, payments, analytics and ad pixels. In the EU and the UK, cookies that are not strictly necessary need the visitor's consent before they are set (Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive and regulation 6 of PECR), and the CCPA gives California residents the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of their personal information. Which rules apply to your store depends on where your customers are.
What cookies does WooCommerce set?
WooCommerce itself sets woocommerce_cart_hash, woocommerce_items_in_cart and wp_woocommerce_session_* for the cart and checkout. Most stores also load cookies from Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, payment providers and marketing extensions. In the EU and the UK, the ones that are not strictly necessary need consent.
Are WooCommerce cart cookies strictly necessary?
Yes. The cart and session cookies are strictly necessary, because checkout cannot work without them. Kukie.io files them under Essential, the category that is always active. Payment provider cookies, such as Stripe's fraud-prevention cookies, should still be listed in your cookie policy.
How do I add cookie consent to my WooCommerce store?
Install the Kukie.io WordPress plugin from WordPress.org: search for Kukie under Plugins > Add New. Activate it, then paste the API key from your Kukie.io account (opens in a new tab) and the banner appears on your store. You do not edit any theme files.
Will a consent banner slow down my WooCommerce store?
Only a little. The shared banner script is about 33 KB compressed (measured in October 2026) and loads asynchronously, so it does not hold up your page. The plugin keeps the script out of JavaScript optimisation in WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache, Autoptimize, WP Fastest Cache and SiteGround Optimizer.
Does Kukie.io work with WooCommerce payment gateways?
Yes. Payment scripts from Stripe, PayPal, Square and Mollie are not on the auto-blocker's tracker list, so they run. Google reCAPTCHA is on it, as a Functional service: if your checkout uses reCAPTCHA, it waits for Functional consent, so test your checkout as a visitor who has refused.
How does Kukie.io handle Google Analytics on WooCommerce?
Through Google Consent Mode v2. Once you switch it on, Kukie.io sets the default consent state for GA4 and Google Ads before their tags run and updates it when the visitor chooses, so Google can model some conversions from visitors who refused. Your Google tags need no changes.
Does WooCommerce include a cookie banner?
No. WooCommerce has privacy tools such as personal data export and erasure requests, but it does not show a consent banner, hold third-party scripts until consent, sort cookies into categories or keep a record of consent. A consent tool such as Kukie.io adds those.
Does Kukie.io work with WooCommerce Subscriptions and other extensions?
Yes. The banner runs alongside WooCommerce Subscriptions, Memberships and other extensions. The scanner finds the cookies they set and proposes a category for each from its database of known cookies. Check any cookie it cannot place.
