Cookie Banner
for Shopify
One line of code in theme.liquid and your store is asking for consent properly. No app to install, no monthly app fee, no theme surgery.
- Free forever plan
- Live in under 5 minutes
- No Shopify app required
Works with your Shopify stack
The whole installation
One line in your theme.
That is the integration.
Kukie.io installs on Shopify as a single script tag pasted into Layout › theme.liquid, immediately after the opening <head> tag. Every page of your storefront picks it up at once, and removing it later is deleting the same line.
What you do not have to do
- Install a Shopify app, or wait on App Store review
- Pay a second monthly subscription on top of your plan
- Grant an app access to your customer or order data
- Duplicate your theme, edit Liquid templates or touch checkout
- Re-do any of it when you switch or update your theme
Why Shopify stores need
a real cookie banner
A Shopify store is never just Shopify. The platform sets its own analytics and cart cookies, and every app you add - reviews, email, loyalty, ad pixels - brings more. Under GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, all of the non-essential ones need consent before they fire, not after.
Cookie Count
25-60
Cookies on a typical store
Shopify's own analytics and cart cookies, plus whatever your theme and installed apps load. The number climbs every time you add an app and nobody tells you.
App Sprawl
Every app
Adds its own tracking
Reviews, email capture, loyalty, upsells, live chat and ad pixels each inject scripts into your storefront. An app you installed for one feature can start setting marketing cookies on page one.
Enforcement
GDPR
Follows the shopper, not you
GDPR follows the shopper, not the merchant. A store based anywhere that ships to Europe is in scope, and data protection authorities have been issuing cookie decisions against online retailers for years.
Ad Performance
Consent is now an ad requirement, not just a legal one
Google requires Consent Mode v2 signals for EEA and UK traffic before Google Ads and GA4 will use it for remarketing and conversion modelling. A store with no consent signal does not just risk a complaint, it loses audience data and modelled conversions on the traffic it paid for.
Checkout Safety
Your cart and checkout stay exactly as they are
Shopify's cart, session and checkout cookies are strictly necessary, and Kukie categorises them that way automatically so they are never blocked. Shopify also hosts checkout on its own domain, where a theme script does not run, so consent blocking on the storefront cannot reach payment processing.
Shopify cookies explained
The cookies a Shopify store actually sets, grouped the way a consent banner has to group them. Kukie's scanner finds all of these on your store without you naming a single one.
Categories shown are the usual classification. Your store's exact set depends on your theme and apps, which is what the free cookie scanner is for. Look any cookie up in the cookie database of 3,400+ known cookies.
Three ways to handle consent
on Shopify
Shopify's built-in banner, a paid consent app from the App Store, or a script tag. They solve different amounts of the problem, and it is worth knowing which before you pick one.
| Capability | Shopify built-in banner | Shopify consent app | Kukie.io script tag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | Toggle in admin | App install and review | One line in theme.liquid |
| Extra monthly cost | None | Usually per month, per store | Free plan available |
| Access to store data | Native | App permissions requested | None requested |
| Blocks third-party scripts before consent | Limited to the Customer Privacy API | Varies by app | Yes, 30+ tracker patterns plus your own |
| Automatic cookie inventory | No | Varies by app | Yes, full store scan |
| Per-region consent models | Region toggles | Varies by app | Yes, per country and per rule |
| Google Consent Mode v2 | Via Shopify's own integration | Varies by app | Built in, plus Microsoft UET and Matomo |
| Exportable consent log | No | Varies by app | Yes, with verifiable receipts |
Shopify's built-in banner and Kukie are not mutually exclusive. Many merchants keep Shopify's Customer Privacy API for Shopify's own tracking and use Kukie for the cookie inventory, script blocking, geo rules and consent log around it.
How to add a cookie banner
to your Shopify store
Three steps, about five minutes, no developer. You need your Shopify admin and a browser tab.
-
01
Create a site, copy the snippet
Open a free Kukie.io account, add your
myshopify.comor custom domain as a site, and copy the one-line embed snippet. -
02
Paste it into theme.liquid
In Shopify admin: Online Store, then Themes, then the ... menu on your live theme, then Edit code. Open
Layout / theme.liquid, paste directly after<head>and Save. -
03
Scan and go live
Run the scanner over your storefront, collection, product and cart pages. Cookies are auto-categorised against 3,400+ known cookies, trackers stay blocked until consent, and Consent Mode v2 starts signalling.
The snippet, in full
theme.liquid<script src="https://cdn.kukie.io/s/YOUR-SITE-KEY/c.js" async></script>
Built for how Shopify stores actually run
Multiple markets, a pile of apps, a theme you did not write and a checkout you cannot touch. Every one of these works from the same single line of code.
Detection
Knows Shopify's own cookies
Cart, session and localisation cookies are recognised and filed as strictly necessary. Shopify analytics and attribution cookies are filed where they belong, so the categories are right before you look at them. See the scanner
Regions
Shopify Markets and geo rules
Sell into the EU, UK and US from one store and show each shopper the right model: opt-in with a real reject button in Europe, opt-out where that is the standard. Geo-targeting
Consent Mode
Google Consent Mode v2
Defaults set before any Google tag fires, updated the instant the shopper chooses, so GA4, Google Ads and the Google & YouTube channel keep modelling conversions. Learn more
Auto-block
Blocks app trackers before consent
Meta Pixel, TikTok, Klaviyo, Hotjar, Clarity, Intercom and 30+ tracker patterns held until consent, with your own URL patterns for anything an app injects. Script blocking
Design
Matches your theme, not ours
Four layouts, your colours, your radius, your logo, your copy. The banner renders in a closed Shadow DOM so your theme CSS cannot leak in and it cannot leak out. Customisation
Translations
70+ languages out of the box
The banner follows the shopper's browser language, including right-to-left layouts, which lines up with the storefront locales you already serve through Shopify Markets.
Consent log
Consent log with receipts
Every decision recorded with a verifiable receipt and an export for audits or a data protection authority request. Analytics and logs
Any store
Plus, Online Store 2.0, headless
Dawn and every Online Store 2.0 theme, Shopify Plus, and headless storefronts on Hydrogen, Remix or Next.js, where the same tag goes in the root document head.
Documents
Legal pages you can link to
Generate a cookie policy and privacy policy from your actual scan results, then embed or link them from your store footer. Legal documents
Built for merchants
Made for people who run a store,
not a compliance department
Nobody opened a Shopify store to read the ePrivacy Directive. The scanner tells you what your store sets, the categories arrive already filled in, the banner matches your theme, and the consent log is there the day someone asks for it.
- No developer needed If you can edit a theme file, you can install it. If you would rather not, send the one line to whoever built your store.
- Nothing to maintain New app, new tracker, new scan. Re-run the scanner and the categories update; the line in theme.liquid never changes.
- One dashboard, every store Running several stores or a client roster? Each store gets its own site, settings and scan under one account.
Compliant in every market you ship to
Shopify Markets makes it trivial to sell into a new country and easy to forget that country's privacy law came with it. Kukie resolves the visitor's region and applies the right consent model per country, on the same store.
GDPR
Explicit opt-in before non-essential cookies for any store serving EU shoppers.
UK GDPR
The same consent standard for the UK, enforced by the ICO under PECR.
CCPA/CPRA
Opt-out rights and a Do Not Sell or Share link for shoppers in California.
LGPD
Consent requirements for personal data of shoppers in Brazil.
